Many of us in the tropics and especially the equatorial hot-and-humid climate will shrug off the usability and practicality of a cabriolet - even with the advent of hardtop coupe-cabriolet in the last decade or so.

Admittedly, I was like that until I sampled a VW Eos over a weekend to the beach town of Port Dickson some three years ago. I had actually "owned" a Porsche Boxster for about a year and it was less convincing with its relatively fiddly and noisier soft-top.

Sadly, with excessive procrastination the VW Eos outing write-up didn't materialise on this blog. Which would have happened to the 308 CC launch story if some good friend of mine didn't whip my butt over this. I also tested the 207 CC sometime ago and you can read all about it here.
I am somewhat a fan of coupe-cabriolet but i am of the opinion that this will have top be your 3rd car or higher in vehicle ownership serials which is actually much an extravagance. In short, a pure lifestyle accessory in the automotive department.

With this in mind, Nasim started off their 2011 new models unveiling with the official launch of the Peugeot 308 CC, the first of four new models due for the Malaysian market this year.
A coupe-cabriolet in 2+2 guise, this topless Pug in THP 156 form, translates to a maximum output of 156 hp + 240 Nm, courtesy of BMW-Peugeot's Prince 1.6-litre complete with twin-scroll turbo and direct injection. The 308 CC comes with a standard six-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic. Peugeot claims a 212 km/h top speed and a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 9.8 secs.
As with most Naza/Nasim automotive launches – the 308 CC is tagged at a rather attractive price i.e. RM186,888, on-the-road with insurance.
Some of the yummy goodies packaged together are the dynamic directional xenon headlamps with automatic height adjustment and washers, LED rear lights, 18-inch alloy wheels and a twin rear diffuser as part of the exterior parcel.

The interior of this gorgeous drop-top features dual zone air-conditioning, electric front seats (with memory settings for the driver's), cruise control, instrument dials with white backgrounds and a retractable high resolution 7-inch 16:9 LCD screen.
Safety kits which are standard include ESP, ABS, EBD, EBA, DSC and Anti-Skid Regulation (ASR) among others. Meanwhile, passive safety kit in the 5-Star Euro NCAP-rated vehicle includes a rear roll-over protection system – comprised of active extendable aluminum roll-over protection bars that pop up within 20-miliseconds in the event of a roll-over accident. Apart from these, there are six airbags, which include the world’s first side head airbags, housed in the seat and deployed laterally from the head restraint.
For in-car entertainment, there’s a CD player/MP3 head unit with Bluetooth connectivity, JBL Hi-Fi audio system with 10 speakers and a 240 watt amplifier. As for the two-piece electrically retractable hard-top roof, this one folds up and down within 20 seconds. For the occasional or avid golfer looking forward to driving to a Golf & Country Club, boot space volume is 465 litres with the top up, and 266 litres with the roof retracted and stowed away in boot.

Peugeot 308 Turbo is NST-Maybank Car of The Year 2009

Giant automotive group Naza's (Nasim) Peugeot 308 Turbo got stamping approval of the New Straits Times/Maybank COTY panel by clinching the prestigious “Overall Car of the Year 2009” Award. Incidentally, the 308 Turbo was also the winner of the Family Car COTY 2009 Award.
The winners for the New Straits Times/Maybank 2009 Awards were announced at a gala dinner at The Saujana Kuala Lumpur, hosted by the New Straits Times and title sponsor Maybank Berhad.

A panel of 10 judges, comprising motoring editors, an automotive blogger and other distinguished personalities unanimously voted for the Peugeot 308 Turbo as winner of the coveted “Overall Car of The Year” based on its impressive handling, powerful performance, comfort, safety and value-for-money.

Judges were impressed by the car’s fuel efficiency, and the performance of the 1.6-litre direct injection turbo petrol engine, already an award winner internationally - but it was the 308 Turbo’s competitive price point and build quality that was the key factor in its win. The car also has a full-length panoramic glass roof, the only car in its class to offer such a feature.

The 308 Turbo is completely knocked down (CKD) and consists of imported parts from France. It is distributed by the official franchise holder of Peugeot Automobiles in Malaysia, Nasim Sdn Bhd (NSB), a member of the Naza Group of Companies.

The winner of the Good Design Award is the Toyota Prius. Already the number one selling hybrid car in the world, The Prius was selected not just for its beautifully sculpted shape, but also how much of its styling have been made to help its aerodynamic efficiency. Judges were also won over by the flowing lines of the car’s interior, the overall “cockpit” feel of the cabin, right down to the innovative use of storage space in the car.

The Volvo XC60, winner of the Luxury SUV award, added another feather to its cap by winning the Safety Award for its impressive list of safety features, which include the laser-based City Safety feature, Lane Departure Warning System and Collision Warning with Auto Brake, which uses radar technology for vehicle tracking.

The winners were selected from 68 new models introduced between December 2008 and October 2009, and judges took into account criteria such as exterior and interior design, comfort and ergonomics, performance, safety, emotional appeal, and after sales service including the comprehensiveness of its warranty. Points were awarded to the cars, and the vehicle with the most points wins the category. The overall Car of The Year winner was then selected from the list of 15 winners.

The night also saw history in the making when two distinguished names in motoring were selected as the “Automotive Men of The Year 2009” Award, Dato’ Dr Ang Bon Beng and Datuk Syed Abdull Hafiz Syed Abu Bakar.

Dato’ Dr Ang is the Executive Director of Edaran Tan Chong Motor, Nissan distributor and franchise holder in Malaysia. He was selected for his efforts in keeping the Tan Chong business thriving and making it the icon it is today, all this in spite of internal turmoil and pressure from its Japanese principal.
Datuk Syed Abdull Hafiz is the outgoing Managing Director of Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua). He was recognised for presenting a product loved by Malaysians for its quality, reliability and styling, notably the Perodua Myvi.
The Car of the Year Awards is the country’s first motoring award, and was launched in 2002 by Cars, Bikes and Trucks, the motoring section of the New Sunday Times, as a means to acknowledge achievements within the motoring industry.

The guest-of-honour for the night was Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, the Deputy Prime Minister. Also gracing the occassion was Datuk Aishah Ahmad, President of the Malaysian Automotive Association.

The event is endorsed by the Malaysian Automotive Association.

2012 Audi A6 at Detroit Auto show 2011

The sedan version of the fashionable Audi A7 Sportback? The little brother of Audi A8? You can call it anyway, but this is the new 2012 Audi A6 as the Ingolstadt-located automaker displayed at Detroit Auto show 2011. The interior of Audi A6 2012 is looking a lot like the one of the four-door coupe Audi A7 Sportback, being the main attraction point of the new German sedan, the model boasting about a range of engines made of fuel efficient engines, promising a maximum of performance with minimum of fuel consumption. The German automaker says that the new generation Audi A6 is 19% more fuel efficient than its forerunner and that in 2011 a hybrid version will be added to the line-up – an electric motor of 45 HP will help the 211 HP petrol engine.

For the fourth time in the past three years, an Audi model has won a prestigious EyesOn Design Award recognizing the best of automotive design displayed at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Audi has received four EyesOn Design Awards over the past three years. State-of-the art design methods and materials ensure extremely low interior noise levels.

EyesOn Design at the North American International Auto Show is sponsored by the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology (DIO) as part of the EyesOn Design series of events. Each year, they host the EyesOn Design automotive exhibition at the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe, Michigan that also focuses on design. The DIO enjoys a close relationship with automotive designers through the EyesOn Design events and by understanding the correlation between design and the eye.

Last year Audi managed to sell 1,090,000 cars worldwide. As Audi exec after Audi exec explained, in their single-minded quest to become “the world’s largest maker of premiere automobiles,” new product is the key. The big news is that new A6 is lighter than the car it replaces. Audi says that the aluminum-intensive body is 66 pounds lighter than the old one, and the total weight savings is 174 pounds, bringing the mid-size sedan’s total under two tons. Audi says up to 19% more efficient, depending on the engine and transmission. The other big powertrain news is the 2011 A6 Hybrid. Powered by a 211 horsepower 2.0-liter TFSI turbocharged I-4 and a 45 horsepower electric motor. There’s a lithium-ion battery in the trunk that can power the car on pure electric for 2-miles. At least more so than Audi.

Peugeot 408 Reviews

Earlier this year, Peugeot launched and introduced the new Peugeot 408 sedan to the Chinese market. Now it looks like the French manufacturer is also keen on bringing their compact sedan to another market, South America.

Peugeot also announced that the "Peugeot 408", the long wheelbase version of the 308, is currently being produced at the company’s PSA Peugeot Citroen Palomar production plant in Buenos Aires, Argentina and will eventually be sold in 27 countries, including Argentina and Brazil.

The 0 denotes the Peugeot 408 as a Peugeot, while the 8 signifies the sedan’s generation.

The Peugeot 408 is offered with a choice of 1.6 Liter 16 V four cylinder making 110 HP or a 2.0 Liter 16 V cranking out 147 HP.
The new Peugeot 408 is a mid-size sedan created by the French car manufacturer Peugeot especially for the Chinese market. The car was designed in France and although intended for the Chinese market, Peugeot plans on selling the car in other countries as well around the world as well.

Peugeot is launching a new "sedan Peugeot 408" in China. This model is designed special for growth market countries and produced by the joint venture companies in China namely Peugeot Dongfeng.

Peugeot 408 using low-cost platform with MacPherson front suspension (front) and torsion-beam (rear). Be extended 2710mm wheelbase, or a 100mm longer than the Peugeot 308 hatchback. With the addition of the rear trunk, total length of 4680mm or 400mm so longer than 308.

The Chinese and South American version of the Peugeot 408 , built on an extended 308 platform and developed by Peugeot and China's DFM, is expected to increase Peugeot's Chinese sales - 410,000 in 2009 - by 30 percent.

“Whilst the car has not been officially confirmed for right-hand drive production at this stage, we are quietly confident that it will be in Australia in the not-too-distant future,” General Manager of Peugeot Australia Ken Thomas said.

“The car has an extended wheelbase allowing for more interior space and the sedan shape obviously allows for more boot space.”

In China, the Peugeot 408 will be powered by a version of the 1.6 litre engine developed by PSA Peugeot Citroen and BMW, along with a 2.0 litre petrol unit, producing 79kW and 110kW respectively.

The 508 marks the return of Peugeot’s “five-0″ designated models, last seen on the 505 from 1979 to around 1992.

2011 Volvo s40 Reviews

2011 Volvo s40 Reviews

While safety-minded family shoppers often consider Volvo's larger sedans and crossover wagons, the S40 compact sedan isn't nearly as popular. The 2011 Volvo S40 is unremarkable from a styling standpoint, though it's even by today's fashion sense a well-sculpted small sport sedan. With the former base S40 2.4i models discontinued, as well as available all-wheel drive, only front-wheel-drive S40 T5 and T5 R-Design remain, both offering the higher-power 2.5-liter turbocharged in-line five-cylinder engine.

The 2011 Volvo S40 is a classy-looking car with a strong reputation for safety. It starts at $27,750, about $2,000 less than the BMW 1-Series.
Volvo redesigned the S40 in 2008. For 2011, Volvo simplified its trim, engine and transmission options; everything else remains the same.

The BMW 1-Series is one of the best drivers in the class. Starting at $29,150, the BMW 1-Series has two engine and transmission options that shoppers can select to fit their driving needs. The Volkswagen GTI is one of the least expensive cars in the class that offers a complete package: high performance, affordability, great fuel economy and a comfy interior. A diesel engine that enhances fuel economy is also available--The "2011 Volvo S40 "is available in two trims: T5 and R-Design.

For the 2011 Volvo S40, the base 2.4i model has been discontinued, as has the all-wheel-drive T5 R-Design. On the positive side, the Volvo S40 certainly looks the part of a European sport sedan. Similarly, the BMW 3 Series and Infiniti G Sedan justify their higher costs through added performance and prestige.

The 2011 Volvo S40 Sedan is available in two trim levels: T5 and T5 R-Design--Adding the optional Preferred package will also get you a sunroof, leather upholstery and a power passenger seat.

Both trims are available with the Climate package, which adds heated front seats, headlight washers, automatic wipers and automatic climate control. Stand-alone options include 18-inch wheels, adaptive xenon headlights, satellite radio, keyless ignition/entry, rear parking sensors and a blind-spot detection system paired with power-folding mirrors.

A standard five-speed automatic routes power to the front wheels -- all-wheel drive is no longer available. The EPA estimates fuel economy at 21 mpg city/30 mpg highway and 24 mpg in combined driving.

Antilock disc brakes, traction control and stability control are standard on all 2011 Volvo S40s. Also included are front-seat side airbags and full-length head curtain airbags, along with whiplash-reducing front head restraints. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety testing, the S40 was awarded the best rating of "Good" in the frontal-offset test and the second-best "Acceptable" rating in the side-impact test.

2011 Audi A4 Review

The city fuel economy for the 2011 Audi A4 is between 21 miles per gallon and 23 miles per gallon. The four door All Wheel Drive Quattro Sedan 2.0T Premium will cost $32,850.
The 2011 Audi A4 has chosen to incorporate a Multi Media Interface into its system.

The "2011 Audi A4" is a viable alternative to the more-expensive BMW 3-series. Audi refreshed the A4 in 2009. Two model years later, the 2011 Audi A4 has experienced few changes.
Combined with its Quattro all-wheel drive system -- which Audi says more than 80 percent of buyers choose -- the 2011 Audi A4 corners aggressively and but can also be a quiet commuter.
While reviewers love this car’s appearance inside and out, Audi’s engine selection puzzles them: a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder. Audi says drivers should average 21 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway with the manual transmission. The " Audi A4" is the largest sedan -- and one of the most affordable -- among Upscale Midsize Cars.

The 2011 Audi A4 is available in sedan and wagon (Avant) body styles. Both come in Premium, Premium Plus and Prestige body styles.

The Premium trim comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, a sunroof (panoramic on Avant), cruise control, foglamps, automatic climate control, eight-way power front seats, a tilt-and-telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather upholstery, a dash-mounted Audi Multi Media Interface (MMI) and a 10-speaker sound system with a CD player, auxiliary audio jack and satellite radio. The A4 Prestige comes standard with 18-inch wheels, keyless ignition/entry, driver memory settings, auto-dimming exterior mirrors, the Navigation package and a Bang & Olufsen premium sound system (optional on Premium Plus). The Avant Prestige gets a power tailgate. Options unique to the Prestige include a blind-spot warning system, the Drive Select package (which provides adjustable settings for the suspension, steering and transmission), adaptive cruise control, a power rear sunshade and manual rear side sunshades.

The Sport package includes 18-inch wheels on the Premium Plus (19-inch wheels on the Prestige), a sport-tuned suspension, a three-spoke steering wheel, more aggressively bolstered seats and automatic transmission shift paddles. The Titanium Sport package available on the Premium Plus and Prestige is essentially a Sport package with some darkened trim and 19-inch wheels.

The sedan's Premium and Premium Plus trim levels come standard as the 2.0T FrontTrak, indicating it has front-wheel drive and a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The Avant is available only with Quattro and the automatic.

The 2011 Audi A4 comes standard with antilock brakes, traction and stability control, front seat side airbags and side curtain airbags. Without the Sport package, an A4 Quattro sedan stopped in an average but still acceptable 123 feet.

The sedan's 12-cubic-foot trunk is average in size, so it's worth considering the Avant, as it offers 17.3 cubic feet.
The 2011 Audi A4's handling is neutral and secure, especially when equipped with the all-wheel-drive system. Read our Audi A4 Avant Long-Term 30,000-Mile Test

KIA Optima-its all-new Optima could be a slam-dunk winner

KIA Optima Slam Dunk Contest

Griffin's coach Kenny Smith said after the dunk that the pass from Davis wasn't where it was supposed to be; it's unclear if Davis was supposed to go off the backboard or whether Griffin needed the ball higher.

Rumors swirled about an over-a-car dunk from Griffin all day, but the Clippers' rookie saved the dunk for the final round.
Probably the NBA because the video is called "Griffin's Car Dunk" and not "Griffin's Optima Dunk."

It was an appropriate coupling of car and event because, even as Kia is riding a wave of sales success, its all-new KIA Optima could be a slam-dunk winner, too.

Coincidence had an KIA Optima test car in my driveway the same night as Griffin's dunk.

The "KIA Optima" has achieved the metamorphosis from "unremarkable choice" to a first-class, five-passenger mid-sized sedan. Even though the Optima shares a platform and engines with the critically acclaimed Hyundai Sonata, the exterior design, suspension tuning, and interior treatment are significantly different.

"Our" KIA Optima was the mid-level EX with an MSRP (including destination) of $23,190. It had the only two factory options available, a $2,000 technology package (navigation system, back-up camera, Infinity audio system) and the $2,250 premium package that included a panoramic two-piece sunroof, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear outboard seats, and my favorite: a heated steering wheel.

Mrs. G especially liked the optional power passenger seat. The heated wheel was a welcome accoutrement, especially on THAT Saturday. Even though the Optima's drivetrain was the same as in the Sonata, the Kia had noticeably different handling characteristics. Under the hood our Kia had the standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder direct injection engine. We achieved 27.2 mpg in mostly cold-weather urban driving. A 6-speed manual transmission, available only on the base LX model, is rated at 24 mpg city and 35 highway.

We found the seats comfortable, and rear-seat passengers were able to enjoy sufficient legroom and a heated seat control. The sloping roofline, coupled with the double-paneled sunroof, limits rear-seat headroom for taller passengers.

Optima's limited optional packages make construction easier and also simplify dealer inventories.

2012 Ford Expedition Reviews

2012 Ford Expedition Reviews
The 2012 Ford Expedition comes with two different engines The 2012 Ford Expedition comes with premium quality interior material. The interior seat wrap comes in varied colours like stone cloth, camel cloth, stone leather and camel leather.

The 2012 Ford Expedition is the biggest SUV in Ford’s fleet and is expected to get revisions that include minor changes to styling and some cabin updates. Meanwhile, falling demand for Expedition’s extended-length version, the Expedition EL, might have Ford thinking about dropping that body style for model-year 2012 or 2013.

Should you wait for the "2012 Ford Expedition" or buy the 2011 Ford Expedition? Wait for the "2012 Expedition". The 2012 Ford Expedition is expected to receive assorted exterior and interior styling revisions as part of a moderate makeover. Its basic size and shape aren’t likely to change: no worries, the 2012 Ford Expedition will remain large, long, and boxy.

The regular-length 2012 Ford Expedition will return at some 17.2 feet long, bumper to bumper, with the EL version -- should it survive -- repeating at a full 18.4 feet. Check your available garage space before committing to an Expedition.

The 2012 Expedition probably will wear a new front end featuring an updated version of Ford’s trademark three-bar grille. Inside, the 2012 Ford Expedition will probably get a mildly freshened dashboard with updated gauges and a revised center stack of controls. Both 2012 Ford Expedition body lengths will again carry seven passengers on three rows of seats, or eight when the middle row is fitted with a bench seat instead of two captain’s chairs. In either configuration, the 2012 Ford Expedition will continue with comfy seating and ample head, shoulder and leg room for first- and second-row passengers.

The 2012 Expedition’s second- and third-row seats will again fold down to expand cargo capabilities. And cargo volume the Expedition does have. The regular-length model has 18.6 cubic feet behind the third row, 55 cubic feet with the third row folded, and 108.3 with both rear rows stowed. In the Expedition EL, the cubic-foot-volume figures are 42.6, 85.5, and 130.8, respectively.

The 2012 Ford Expedition should again be offered in multiple trim levels complemented by numerous options opportunities. Mechanical: The 2012 Ford Expedition is expected to offer new engine choices that can help bring this automotive throwback into the modern age. Out to pasture should go the long-serving 5.4-liter V-8 with its 310 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque.
One possibility is Expedition’s first V-6, which likely would become the 2012 model’s base engine. Tuned for truck duty in the F-150, output is 360 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. The 2012 Ford Expedition will continue with a choice of rear-drive or optional four-wheel drive (4wd). As before, the 2012 Ford Expedition will come standard with Ford’s AdvanceTrac stability control system that works to prevent fishtailing in extreme cornering or emergency handling maneuvers. The 2012 Ford Expedition will also continue standard with antilock four-wheel-disc antilock brakes for added stability in stops. Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon and Chevrolet Suburban/GMC Yukon XL: These are the General Motors rivals to the Expedition. Suburban and Yukon XL also should return in heavier-duty models available with a 352-horse 6.0-liter V-8. Estimated base-prices range is $38,500-$55,000 for Tahoe/Yukon and $41,000-$56,000 for Suburban/Yukon XL.

Estimated base-price range is $39,000-$54,000. Toyota Sequoia: Based on the Toyota Tundra pickup truck, the Sequoia, like the Nissan Armada, is slightly larger than the regular-length Expedition (and Tahoe) but smaller than the Expedition EL (and Suburban/Yukon XL). Estimated base-price range is $40,000-$60,000.

A six-speed automatic is standard. EPA-estimated fuel economy stands at 19 mpg city/25 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined with front-wheel drive and 18/23/20 with all-wheel drive.

The 2011 Mazda Tribute comes with standard antilock brakes (front disc, rear drum), stability and traction control, front-seat side airbags and side curtain airbags. Thankfully, the Tribute and Escape's crash ratings are strong.

In general, the 2011 Mazda Tribute is pleasant to drive.
The "2011 Mazda Tribute" ranks 21 out of 23 Affordable Compact SUVs. Reviewers say the 2011 Mazda Tribute pales in comparison not only to its platform-mate, the Ford Escape, but also to most compact SUVs.

Poor Mazda Tribute – it just doesn’t seem to fit in anywhere. It’s that re-badging that many reviewers say is the problem with the Mazda Tribute. While the Ford Escape has benefited from freshening and high-tech interior features that reviewers love, the Tribute has languished. The Tribute shares a platform with the Ford Escape, and reviewers say that if you like the Tribute, you’ll love the Escape.

For 2011, the Tribute is mostly unchanged. The Tribute comes in several trims: i Sport, i Touring, i Grand Touring, and s Grand Touring.

Double-overhead camshafts improve engine breathing and high-revving response, which in turn improves performance and fuel economy. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard.
Electric Power Steering (EPS), which improves vehicle sensitivity, is standard, and, improves NVH and fuel economy by eliminating the power steering pump.

Part of being a great sports vehicle is great sporty design, and the Tribute scores well here. Tribute’s interior is upscale and comfortable. Car-like front-wheel drive is standard. If extra traction is necessary – either for off-road driving or pulling heavy loads in slippery conditions – the Tribute is available with Mazda’s innovative Active Torque Control Coupling (ATCC) four-wheel-drive system. A sophisticated computer monitors the engine, wheel speeds and transmission, and automatically transfers torque between the front and rear wheels. Compared with less sophisticated four-wheel drive systems, ATCC improves driving responsiveness, handling and fuel economy.

The vehicle seats five adults in comfort. Both front doors have storage compartments, as do the backs of each front seat (Touring and Grand Touring models).

The rear seat is asymmetrically split 60:40, which improves carrying versatility. Standard features include automatic headlights, 16-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, air conditioning, AM/FM/CD audio system, ambient temperature gauge, remote keyless entry system and power mirrors, door locks and windows. Cruise control is standard on vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions. A more sophisticated and cozy interior features leather-trimmed seats, heated front seats, garage door opener, electrochromatic mirror with rearview backup camera display and leather-wrapped steering wheel.

2011 Kia Optima Review

The 2011 Kia Optima is a big knock-out punch to the face of competitors in the segment.
The new Kia Optima is the ultimate expression of the brand’s new heritage.

From the outside the new "Kia Optima "is without fail the most modern-looking car out of Korea to date. Designing cars that have an emotional connection to their buyers.

The 2011 Kia Optima is a midsize sedan available in four trim levels: LX, EX, EX Turbo and SX.
The EX comes standard with the Convenience package as well as 17-inch alloy wheels, heated mirrors, automatic headlights, foglights, keyless ignition/entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear air vents and leather upholstery. The Premium package for the EX and SX adds a panoramic sunroof, a four-way power passenger seat, driver seat memory, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats. On the EX and EX Turbo, this package also includes a heated steering wheel.

The 2011 Kia Optima LX and EX are powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produces 200 hp and 186 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual is standard on the LX Manual, while a six-speed automatic is standard on all other Optimas. In California-emissions states, the Optima has a Super Ultra Low Emissions rating (versus Ultra-Low elsewhere) resulting in a lower power output of 192 hp and 181 lb-ft.

EPA-estimated fuel economy is 24 mpg city/34 mpg highway and 27 mpg combined with the automatic. The Optima Turbo's EPA-estimated fuel economy is 22/34/26 -- outstanding for a car with this much power.

The 2011 Kia Optima comes standard with four-wheel antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, side airbags, side curtain airbags and hill start assist. In Edmunds brake testing, an Optima EX came to a stop from 60 mph in 121 feet -- a good performance.

The "2011 Optima "has a composed ride that's comfortable without being isolating.
An aggressive stance, chrome tipped dual exhausts and, on top trims, flashy chrome wheels complete the look.

Performance-wise, the new Optima does it all right, with a sweet, powerful-yet-economical engine, great steering, and a quick, nimble feel overall. The bright spot is that heated-and-cooled front seats as well as heated back seats are optional on the Optima EX and SX.

Features remain a strength throughout the Kia lineup, and the Optima is no exception. Even mid EX trims get things like dual-zone climate control and a smart-key system.

Top SX trims will offer a more powerful 274-hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while an even higher-mileage Hybrid model will join the lineup late in the model year.

2011 Ford Taurus Reviews

2011 Ford Taurus - this ain’t your Mama’s Taurus! Options found on foreign-designed vehicles are standard equipment in the new" Ford Taurus". The 2011 Ford Taurus is a car with appeal, engineering, features and benefits that won’t take a back seat to any other vehicle in the world.

The "Ford Taurus" has been redesigned. When Ford redesigned the Taurus in 2010, it added some much-needed life (and competition) to the Affordable Large Car class. Before the Taurus’s update, buyers looking for a comfortable large car with decent performance had only one option: the Toyota Avalon. With the updated Taurus, buyers now have two very good options when shopping large cars.

Car reviewers have a lot of good things to say about the Taurus.
Most car reviewers say that the Ford Taurus is an excellent large car, but they say the same things about the Toyota Avalon.

The 2011 Taurus is available in SE, more upscale SEL, near-luxury Limited and high-performance SHO trims. The Ford Taurus SHO is reviewed separately.

A new high-performance Taurus SHO, powered by a turbocharged V-6, also joined the model line. The only down side to the new Taurus versus the old? Although the 2011 Ford Taurus can hardly be called exciting, it's a big improvement over the pre-2010 version. The 2011 Ford Taurus moves off the line smartly with its 3.5-liter V-6, making 263 horsepower and 249 pound-feet of torque. The Taurus SHO benefits from a lot more power, but it's a little less transformational than in past SHO Taurus sedans—in part because the SHO puts the power to the road with such stoicism and a lack of pulse-raising excitement. Road manners for standard Taurus models are quite impressive; the 2011 Taurus rides more firmly than you might expect from such a big sedan, taut but not high-strung, with a smooth ride and some natural body roll.

Front seats in the Ford Taurus are a little constrained by the large console, though it has great room for tall drivers. The Taurus is strong on safety. The Taurus SHO also offers an optional rearview camera.
The long list of standard features on the 2011 Ford Taurus means even base versions are well-equipped. The Taurus SE gets an AM/FM/CD player with MP3 playback; tilt/telescope steering; a 60/40 split-folding rear seat; a power driver seat; and power locks, windows, and mirrors.

Ford F-150 pick-up trucks Recall in the U.S. and Canada

Ford F-150 Recall
The Ford recall of 144,000 F-150 pick-up trucks sold in the 2005 and 2006 model years is due to inadvertent airbag deployment.

Ford Motor Co. announced Wednesday it will recall almost 150,000 F-150 pickups in the U.S. and Canada because of a potential airbag problem, but that's a small fraction of the 1.3 million trucks government auto safety regulators asked Ford to recall.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has the authority to force Ford to recall all the vehicles it asked for. The trucks being recalled were produced between November 2004 and June 2005 at Ford's Norfolk, Va., assembly plant. Ford said it is recalling only the vehicles made at this plant because the rate of unwanted airbag deployments for these particular trucks is many times higher than for trucks made at other factories.
A warning light indicating the airbag requires servicing usually lights up multiple times before the deployment occurs, Ford (F, Fortune 500) added.

The Ford F-series truck has been the best-selling passenger vehicle in America for almost 30 years.
Ford Motor Co. said Wednesday it will recall thousands of F-150 pickup trucks for potential airbag problems, the second safety issue this month with its best-selling vehicle.
Owners reported airbags inadvertently deploying after starting their pickups, Ford spokesman Wes Sherwood said in a statement--That recall started Feb. 14.

The recall involves trucks built at Ford's now-closed Norfolk, Va., auto factory from November 2004 through June 2005 and sold in the 2005 and 2006 model years. The automaker said the inadvertent airbag deployments are preceded by many illuminations of the airbag warning lamp indicating that restraint system service is required.

Federal safety regulators are reviewing Ford's recall plans and looking into whether the automaker's plan will fix enough vehicles with the potential for unexpected airbag deployment

The F-Series is the bestselling truck in America and last year was the nation's top selling vehicle of any type.

Trucks built at factories in Dearborn, Mich., and in Kansas City had much smaller rates of unexpected airbag deployment.

If not serviced, and unique circumstances occur, an inadvertent driver frontal airbag deployment may occur."

Federal safety regulators had wanted Ford to recall 1.3 million of the trucks, a wider range that included vehicles from the 2004 through 2006 model year. Sherwood said Ford decided it could correct the problem with a limited recall.

2011 Jaguar XF Review

2011 Jaguar XF
Introduced two years ago, the Jaguar XF lineup started a clean break from the overtly traditional Jaguar shapes of the past. Last year, new XF Supercharged and XFR high-performance models were added to the lineup; now for 2011 the XF gets a very substantial 85-hp boost, with a new standard 5.0-liter V-8 replacing the previous 4.2-liter one. Overall, there's nothing heavy-handed or retro about the look of the 2011 Jaguar XF. Stealthy, gripping performance is the XF's calling card. That said, the XF's powertrain itself is sneaky. This year even the base-model 2011 Jaguar XF gets a 385-horsepower, 5.0-liter V-8, while the high-performance XFR and XF Supercharged models get a 5.0-liter supercharged V-8—making 470 hp in the Supercharged and 510 hp in the XFR. Light, direct steering and capable brakes add up to a joyful driving experience, and with 20-inch tires and electronic systems like Active Differential Control and Adaptive Dynamics shuffling power between the rear wheels and adjusting suspension and steering firmness, the 5,000-pound Jaguar XF out-nimbles some of the less weighty sedans in its class. Leather trim is double-stitched, and LED lighting mixes with choice wood and metallic trim to turn the cabin into a most atmospheric space. The Jaguar XF is a sport sedan, with all the features of a luxury sedan.

The Jaguar’s classing V8 engine is availabe in four choices on this model: the 4.2-liter 300 horsepower; the 5.0-liter, 385 horsepower V8; the 5.0-liter, 470 horsepower supercharged V8; and the 5.0-liter, 510 horsepower supercharged V8.

The 2011 model will have loads of standard features, such as a sunroof, rear parking sensors, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.
The interior of the Jaguar is no less opulent. In test drives, the 2011 Jaguar performs admirably. With its unique six-speed automatic transmission, the Jaguar takes corners easily, has great stopping power, and a smooth, suspension-aided ride.
The 2011 Jaguar XF is a rear-wheel drive only vehicle that comes with a six-speed automatic transmission.

The "2011 Jaguar XF" is not your grandmother’s Jaguar. This vehicle is a car that has great handling, and if you’re in the market for a car in this segment, is well worth a test drive. The Jaguar has enough standard and optional luxury features to satisfy the most discriminating taste.

If there is a drawback to this vehicle, it is probably interior room.
The 2011 Jaguar XF is a midsize luxury sedan available in four trim levels: base XF, XF Premium, XF Supercharged and XFR. Standard equipment for the base XF includes 18-inch wheels, halogen headlamps, rear parking sensors, a sunroof, automatic headlights, automatic dual-zone climate control, keyless ignition, leather upholstery and heated 10-way power front seats with driver memory functions. The window shade, heated steering wheel and 19-inch wheels are among the stand-alone options on the base XF.

The XF Supercharged comes standard with a supercharged V8, 20-inch wheels and quad tailpipes. The "2011 Jaguar XF "features three engines in four models, each with a corresponding trim level. The base XF and the XF Premium sport a 5.0-liter V8 that produces 385 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. Estimates for the supercharged XFR engine are 15/21/17.

Standard safety features include antilock disc brakes with brake assist, stability and traction control, front-seat airbags, front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and active front head restraints. A rearview camera and a blind-spot warning system are optional on the base XF and standard on the XF Premium, XF Supercharged and XFR.

Braking performance for the XF lineup is particularly noteworthy.

2011 Infiniti G37

2011 Infiniti G37 Review
Essentially what was sport-package front and rear styling is standard for 2011, and the Sport models get a more aggressive look and updated wheels.

Coupe and convertible models receive the same sport-package treatments for 2011, and the fog lights on the 2011 coupes have been relocated to the lower grille openings as they were on the 2010 sedan. All Gs share Infiniti's affinity for wave shapes in the aluminum hoods.

Despite the differences in styling, the Infiniti G sedan, coupe, and convertible have similar exterior dimensions and an identical wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear wheels). From the side or three-quarter view the coupe and convertible share a mild family resemblance to the shorter, chunkier Nissan Z-car.

It's slightly wider than the other G models, with a modified rear suspension that allows for the top's power mechanism and stowage space behind the rear seat. The Sport package gives the convertible a special, more aggressive looking grille and front end.

The factory wheel designs for the 2011 Infiniti G models are handsome. The standard 17-inch wheels on sedans feature a new five-spoke, triple-fork design. Essentially what was sport-package front and rear styling is standard for 2011, and the Sport models get a more aggressive look and updated wheels.

The factory wheel designs for the 2011 Infiniti G models are handsome.
The doors on the two-door models are long and heavy. The "G37 Convertible" comes with an adaptive climate control system that automatically adjusts airflow and fan speed based on top position and road speed. Rear seat space in the G37 Convertible is just as tight. The G37 Convertible offers competitive trunk space when compared with other cars in the class, with 10.3 cubic feet, but only with the roof up. The G37 Convertible comes with an adaptive climate control system that automatically adjusts airflow and fan speed based on top position and road speed. Rear seat space in the G37 Convertible is just as tight.

Rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are both available and the engine, a 3.7-liter V6, is more than up to the task. The 2011 G37 is also available with a 7-speed automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual.

Several thoughtful features converge to make the 2011 Infiniti G37 a veritable powerhouse. A 6-speed manual transmission is also available. Sport models get key enhancements like limited slip differentials and stiffer suspensions.

The front seats are undeniably comfortable; the feasibility of seating three people in the backseat, however, is a bit low.
Despite the fact that the 2011 Infiniti G37 is a sedan that, in theory, seats five, the backseat will more realistically seat two. Although trunk space is limited, especially in convertible models, the rear seats fold down for additional storage space.

A G37 coupe with a slightly higher calling. Next comes the IPL-specific kit: a rear spoiler, front and rear fascias, side sills, chrome exhaust tips, and beautiful dark-finished 19-inch wheels shod with staggered-width Bridgestone Potenza RE050A rubber. The chassis gets unique spring rates and shock tuning, as well as the sportier steering, huge brake discs, and brake calipers from the G37S. The IPL G will be available only in dark gray metallic or black paint, with the interior color options restricted to all black or black with red seats, door trim, and detail stitching.

2011 Altima Coupe Review

This Altima felt to me like a relatively sparsely equipped model, with its cloth seats, four-cylinder engine, and lack of navigation. The only readily apparent option was the CVT automatic, which I'd skip.

The Nissan Altima is back again, in both coupe and sedan styles. The base price for the 2011 sedan is $19,900. Despite what logic might dictate, the 2011 Altima Hybrid is not the highest-priced Altima offering. The "2011 Altima "3.5 SR coupe has that honor at $24,740.

Nissan hasn’t veered from the 2011 Altima foundation built on two gas engines and a gas-electric hybrid. The majority of Altima purchasers select the four-cylinder engine. The 2011 Altima 2.5 sedan and 2.5 S sedan and coupe are equipped with a 175-horsepower 2.5-liter I-4. 2011 Altima coupes are available with a choice of the CVT or a six-speed manual transmission, regardless of engine size.

The Altima is a nimble ride overall, agile and quick. Nissan currently offers a three year, 36,000 mile basic warranty, a five year, 60,000 mile powertrain warranty, and a five year, unlimited mileage corrosion warranty on its Altima models.

Nissan dug into the QR family of engines for the 2.5-liter aluminum inline four-cylinder that powers the Altima Coupe’s 2.5 S trim. The 3.5-liter VQ engine in the 3.5 SR trim has an aluminum block and heads, DOHC design, and variable valve timing.

The Coupe offers a six-speed manual or a shiftable continuously variable transmission (CVT) that is clearly the better option.
An abbreviated wheelbase means more agility in the curves for the Altima Coupe, and it's quite sprightly for a front-wheel-drive car.

Legible, reachable controls make the interior of the Altima Coupe a joy to navigate.

Front, front-side, and curtain-side airbags, antilock four-wheel disc brakes, and stability and traction control are standard features for every Altima, and while NHTSA test results have yet to be released for the 2011 Altima Coupe due to a change in testing procedures, 2010 results show five-star ratings for all but frontal crashes, which earned four stars.

The Altima Coupe's 3.5-liter engine is a winner, providing performance and relative efficiency with a nice level of refinement that has gotten the attention of owners and Ward’s alike. It's a shame there isn’t a serviceable manual transmission, but the CVT offers a useable alternative.

New Hyundai i40 will make its world debut on 2011 Geneva Auto Show

The Hyundai i40, essentially a Sonata wagon, will make its world debut on March 1 at the 2011 Geneva Auto Show.
"We have no plans for a Sonata wagon in the U.S.," a Hyundai spokesman told Inside Line on Friday.

The Hyundai i40 wagon will be introduced in Europe this year, with a sedan version to follow, the company said.

GENEVA — The European-designed Hyundai i40 — essentially a Sonata wagon — will make its world debut on March 1 at the 2011 Geneva Auto Show. Hyundai described all of those features as "new technologies for Hyundai."

This is the all-new Hyundai i40, the Korean brand's Ford Mondeo-rivalling estate car.

As a premium offering it boasts heated and reclining front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel and an active de-mist system that automatically detects and clears mist on the windscreen--The 2011 Geneva Motor Show begins on March 1st.

Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors Sdn Bhd (Hyundai) recently revealed the first pictures of the new i40, ahead of its world premiere at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show which will be set for launch in Europe during the second quarter of this year.

From stunning design and specification, to industry-leading technology and after-sales care, the i40 sets itself apart from its competitors,” said senior vice president and chief operating officer of Hyundai Motor Europe, Allan Rushforth.

The i40 would be Hyundai’s first D-segment vehicle to be developed specifically for the European market, with a package of powertrains, equipment and technology tailored for European tastes.

Designed and engineered at Hyundai’s research and development headquarters in Russelsheim, Germany, the i40 model maintained its signature features such as the hexagonal grille.

The ‘modern premium’ concept was also evident in the efficient powertrain choices available to i40 buyers.
Hyundai’s customer care package ‘Five Year Triple Care’ would come as a standard on the model.

New 2012 BMW M6 convertible

The all new 2012 BMW M6 convertible is spied while making test runs in cold wintry whether of Germany. The "BMW M6 convertible "will generate 555 bhp power and 550 lb-ft of torque. Experts believe carbon fiber is what BMW has used to give M6 a super strong body

The M6 will eschew the V-10 engine that powered the current car, likely for the 555-horsepower twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 in the X5 M. M quad tailpipes give the car a sporty look.
The 2010 BMW M6 offered a manual or automatic transmission but it’s unclear at this point what the latest M6 will make available. With it, the 2010 M6 convertible stickered at $112,025.

The new BMW 6 Series Convertible will be available this spring at US dealerships across the country and while the high-end cabriolet is preparing for the launch, the flagship M6 Convertible continues its testing sessions.

The M6 Convertible pictured here, was spotted in Sweden yesterday and showcases big brakes behind the larger wheels and M-signature quad-exhaust pipes out back.

The power is exclusively directed to the rear wheels and should make for an impressive acceleration. The new M6 will have its own attributes and characteristics in order to challenge the established rivals from Porsche, Audi, Bentley, Aston Martin, Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz.
BMW M6 Convertible will debut in spring 2012.

2011 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS

Mitsubishi Lancer
The 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS has a sportier look than most suburban runabouts, but lacks real sporting performance. The Mitsubishi models that use the Lancer body and platform cover a wide range of performance and cost. We found the Lancer Evolution X an incredible thrill ride and the Lancer Ralliart a fun sport driver. But now we're looking at the 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS, a semisporting version of the basic Lancer.

Mitsubishi offers the Lancer in a Sportback version, a slick hatchback, but our GTS was the sedan version.
With the CVT, the GTS gets an EPA-rated 23 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. Strictly front-wheel drive, the electric power-steering unit is tuned for its suburban mission.

Unlike the more radical Lancer variations with their spoilers and hopped-up engines, the Lancer GTS is a decent compact car with enough room for four and decent economy. In general, younger people liked the color, "more mature" folks didn't. We spent a lot of time driving the Lancer around town, which accounts for the rather poor test mileage. Handling is also decent. The front suspension is by MacPherson struts and the rear by multi links, and it is sport-tuned. The information panel has almost too much information, with fuel economy, outside temperature, fuel level, water temperature, gear and odometer.

We also appreciated the heated seats. Those front seats offered good side support. The rear seats offer good leg and knee room. the rear seats fold 60/40 to increase trunk capacity. Pushbuttons on the seat backs release the seats.

As for music, the 710 watt Rockford-Forsgate audio system worked well. Overall, the" Lancer GTS" is a nice compact package with a knockout paint job (my feeling). I question whether the options (leather seats, sound system, sun roof, added goodies) are worth the extra cost.

There has always been a glaringly obvious gap in Mitsubishi's current Lancer lineup. It's the giant-slayer, David, the little car that humbles supercars. It's also the hottest of the rally-inspired all-wheel-drive turbocharged pocket rockets. The Evo's only real competition is the Subaru WRX STI and, let's be honest, the Evo has been the better car for years now (Subaru has just updated its warrior for 2011, so a new comparison is in order). In the middle of its arch rival's portfolio has long lived the WRX, Subaru's Goldie Loxian sportster, which is very fast, very nimble, but very well priced (it still starts at under $25,000). Mitsubishi had nothing until this year, when the Japanese industrial powerhouse brought over two new flavors of its hopped-up Lancer, the Ralliart and the Ralliart Sportback.

2011 Volkswagen Touareg review

Face-lifted once since its 2002 born-on date, the VW Touareg is set for a full redesign for 2011. This saves about 400 pounds, which when combined with its increased body rigidity, should substantially sharpen on-pavement performance.

Volkswagen's first-ever production hybrid is based on a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 augmented by a battery-powered electric motor. Outside the new Touareg appears tauter and edgier, with more pronounced character lines and wheel arches. Early first-drive results reveal that the reworked 2011 Volkswagen Touareg has not only taken its place alongside contemporary rivals like Acura's MDX and BMW's X5, it also appears to have what it takes to compete against cutting-edge hybrid rivals like the Lexus RX 450h and Mercedes ML450 Hybrid.

The 2011 Volkswagen Touareg ranks 1 out of 17 Luxury Midsize SUVs. Redesigned for 2011, the Volkswagen Touareg boasts a sharp new exterior, a luxurious and more spacious cabin, and an all-new hybrid model.

Though it’s significantly improved, the "2011 Touareg" is expected to cost about the same as the previous model. Though the base model is the cheapest, reviewers largely recommend its hybrid and diesel counterparts instead. The base Touareg’s 16/23 mpg city/highway rating is in the middle of the class. But while the base Volkswagen Touareg has some flaws, don’t entirely discount it.

If you’re considering the Touareg Hybrid, it’s also worth it to look at the RX 450h hybrid. Its 32/28 fuel economy rating is the best in its class, and the RX starts at about $8,000 less than the Touareg Hybrid.

As part of its redesign, the Touareg has lost its permanent four-wheel drive system. The 2011 Volkswagen Touareg comes in three trims: the base VR6 FSI, the diesel-powered TDI, and the all-new Hybrid. If you prefer the old Touareg, don’t despair.

There is a conventional gasoline V-6 (3.6-liter, 280-horsepower) unit, the clean-diesel 3.0-liter V-6 TDI that makes 225 horsepower, and then the new Hybrid, which combines a supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 with an electric traction motor for total power of 380 horsepower.

All three Touareg models use a new eight-speed automatic transmission. The Touareg Hybrid ain't light, and it feels every bit of its weight on the road.

The 2011 Volkswagen Touareg V6 TDI has a 3.0-liter diesel engine that outputs 176 kW / 240 PS and 550 Nm of torque.

Range Rover Evoque is like a trendy

It feels more like a saloon than it does a traditional Land Rover.
Which brings us to challenge number one: making the smallest Land Rover product share the characteristics of its biggest one. "We want the Evoque to feel agile and fun," says Cross, "yet it also has to be refined, with Range Rover levels of sophistication."

Nonetheless, this Range Rover is, ultimately, still a Land Rover product and has to perform off-road. "With a tall car the challenge is getting good roll control with an appropriate level of comfort for a Range Rover. The physics of a tall car are against you," says Cross.

Cross drives smoothly yet briskly, with measured steering inputs. The Evoque gets electric power steering, which comes with benefits and drawbacks. "EPAS is good," says Cross. Any remaining tweaking between now and the Evoque's summer launch is mostly software-related.
IMAGINE a Range Rover capable of nearly 50mpg and with the CO2 emissions of a supermini.
The Evoque handles like a sporty coupé, not a 4x4, but with the ride, comfort and sophistication you'd expect from a Range Rover.

Even at low speeds, it's petrol quiet. It's fitted with Land Rover's latest stop/start technology that automatically cuts the engine in traffic to boost the fuel economy and help reduce CO2 emissions to just 159g/km.

The engine is smooth and instantly responsive, especially if you use the F1-style paddles on the steering wheel that allow you to switch from auto to manual changes to maximise the Evoque's handling.

My test drive across the Welsh countryside, with the firm's handling guru Mike Cross at the wheel, left me in no doubt that Land Rover have motoring's newest phenomenon.
The Evoque is no fashion poser but an authentic Range Rover in every way, but in my view the most fun to drive.

The firm already have a waiting list of thousands of orders from all over the world - the public have been captivated by the car.

When you step inside the Evoque it is like a trendy, shrink-wrapped Range Rover. From the sumptuous stitched leather to the brushed aluminium trim, it oozes quality.
The Evoque is another good news story for British jobs as it's creating 1,000 new ones at Land Rover's Halewood factory.

Murray Dietsh, is the man leading the team that has to deliver Land Rover's most important vehicle ever.

It will be a Range Rover that people aspire to. urray added: "This vehicle shifts the 4x4 mindset.
Land Rover is set to unveil its electric powered vehicle at this year’s Geneva Motor Show.
Land Rover will also show off its keenly-anticipated Range Rover Evoque in both coupe and five-door forms, as well as the latest versions of the Discovery 4 and Range Rover.

The technology-packed Range_e is one of several working prototypes currently being developed at Land Rover’s design and engineering centre at Gaydon.

It is based on a Range Rover Sport and features a standard 3.0 litre TDV6 diesel with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. It has a range of 20 miles on purely electric power, a top speed of around 120mph and a range of 690 miles. 2011 Kia Soul

2011 Kia Soul
2011 Kia Soul
As far back as 2005, Kia tasked itself with becoming Korea's sporty automaker, leaving parent Hyundai to become a more affordable luxury brand.

Since that time, Kia has steadily introduced a slew of greatly improved products, but nothing remotely "sporty" has hit showroom floors. At first blush, things aren't promising – the Soul is front-drive, modestly powered, tallish, and squared-off in an economy-car-tall-wagon-crossover-looking sort of way. Most people will probably find the Soul either irrepressibly cool or simply fail to "get" its style altogether – there's no middle ground to be had. Quite literally, this is by design – Kia has architected its Soul to elicit the same strong love/hate emotions that went on to fuel blockbusters like the Chrysler 300 and the original Scion xB. Us?

Step inside, and oh, my... there's that club kid again. Funky shapes, patterns and retina-flambéeing colored plastic abounds inside. Like a skate punk that hides a straight-A report card from his mates, there's a practicality streak inside the Soul. The Soul's boxy form also pays dividends in the form of good usable interior space, with spacious accommodations for two up front and belts for three in the second row. Total interior cargo space is good at 53.4 cu-ft (rear 60/40-split seats folded flat), but others, like the Scion xB trounce it (69.9 cubes). Soul Power(train)

So the KIA Soul is a utile, fashion-forward device, but what's under the hood? Side Note: the engine compartment looks a bit unfinished and agrarian, without so much as a plastic cover to hide the oily bits.

For the record, Kia is also offering a base 1.6-liter four-cylinder model paired exclusively with a five-speed manual transmission, and that combination is good for 122 horsepower (at 6,300 rpm) and 113 lb-ft of torque (at 4,200 rpm).

Having debuted in 2010, the little has changed for the "2011 Kia Soul". Other than the Scion xB and Nissan Cube, there are few cars that share the 2011 Kia Soul’s funky shape. The Kia Soul has received a slew of awards. AAA even named the Soul a Top Pick for Dog Owners.
Before you buy a Soul, you should know that Kia recalled about 24,000 Soul vehicles to fix interior lighting panels that can cause fires. Although it’s more expensive than the Soul, the Scion xB has bold exterior styling that reviewers like. The Soul is a hatchback, but it doesn’t offer lots of storage space. Details: 2011 Kia Soul

The Soul comes in four well-equipped trim levels -- a base edition, the Soul Plus (+), Soul Exclaim (!), and Soul Sport. The Soul was new for 2010, and the "2011 Kia Soul "is very similar to last year’s model.

Inside, the Soul isn't nearly as groundbreaking. Most Soul wagons will sport a four-cylinder engine with 2.0 liters of displacement, 142 horsepower, and 137 pound-feet of torque; but there's also a 1.6-liter four-cylinder making 122 horsepower and 115 pound-feet of torque. All Souls ride atop a conventional MacPherson strut front and torsion-beam rear suspension, and they have four-wheel disc brakes. Base and mid-line Souls wear 15- and 16-inch wheels. The Soul Sport leads the performance pack with 18-inch wheels and different suspension tuning. The boxy exterior of the 2011 Kia Soul promises a versatile, roomy, almost van-like interior, and it delivers on that promise—with interior space for five (or four adults) or, with the back seats folded forward, some very impressive cargo space. Dimensionally it checks in at 161.6 inches overall, 70.3 inches wide, 63.4 inches high, and it has a 100.4-inch wheelbase.

The front seats also have active head restraints, which help curb whiplash. The awesome-sounding (optional) 315-watt sound system and well-integrated Bluetooth add to that impression. Options on various Soul models include a sunroof, that sound-system upgrade, and more than 60 accessories, from styling add-ons to interior trim. Two different Special Edition Soul models will be offered in the "2011 KIA Soul" model year; both will be based on the Soul+ trim and include automatic climate control plus unique exterior styling and special accessories.

2011 Hyundai Veloster

What it is: A small front-drive, four-seat coupe to replace the Tiburon. Hyundai will position the car below the rear-drive Genesis coupe.

Platform: The Hyundai Veloster will share some of its parts with the compact front-drive Accent.
Competition: Ford Focus coupe, Honda Civic coupe, Mitsubishi Eclipse, Scion tC.

The Hyundai Veloster is a front-drive coupe with a pretty sleek profile on the driver's side. Until it dawns on you that the door is shorter than on the driver's side and that there's another door behind it. Hyundai says that - unlike the Mini Clubman - the door arrangement will be properly reversed for us right-hand drivers.
Engine is a 1.6 turbo, and there's a twin-clutch transmission option.

Inside it's got the usual show car touches including multi-part display screens, pod seats and suicide doors. But it also has something Hyundai is introducing on its production cars: BlueLink. This is a fully voice-activated connection pack for phones, music, nav and reading and composing emails.
Composing smart or funny or well-argued ones is definitely going to take your mind off the driving.

Hyundai today finally unveiled its eagerly awaited "Hyundai Veloster coupe "at the 2011 North American International Auto Show, aka the Detroit show. We first saw the Veloster as a concept car at the 2007 Seoul motor show.

The Hyundai Coupe slid quietly off sale in 2009, and the Veloster - promised in concept form a couple of years ago - fires the Koreans back into the semi-sporting market. We'll get the new Veloster in Europe, too.

The architecture underpinning the new Veloster is all Hyundai i30. A twin-clutch transmission - Hyundai's first - is also available.
Interestingly, unlike Mini's oddball Clubman, Hyundai has engineered the solitary rear door for left- and right-hand drive. The door handle on the single rear door is cleverly hidden, maintaining the coupe silhouette.

'This exciting car offers progressive buyers a sleek and distinctive design in an innovative three-door coupe form that provides practicality as well as driving pleasure.
